Whole House Humidifiers
Versus Room Humidifiers, Which is Better?

Whole House Humidifiers:

Install & Forget it!
A whole house humidifier features the ability to draw water directly from your water supply through a blower system integrated into your furnace. You can select from a few different types of units. One offers a sprayer that injects mists into the airflow through your ductwork. Another unit offers a foam cylinder that rotates in a water tray with air blowing through and around it. For homes with geothermal or heat pump systems steam humidifiers are the best solution.

Pluses:
Virtually no maintenance
Keeps your entire home at even humidity
One-time setup!
Quiet and virtually soundless
Cost efficient to install
Simple to clean
Lower utilities

Because the whole-house system draws on the water for your existing plumbing as it's needed, when it's needed, there is no filling and no mess! This is the opposite of portable units that need a lot of attention. This whole-house-system is cost efficient and with a onetime set up leaving you with more comfort and fewer headaches.

Minuses:

Doesn't come in a box for you to bring home and install
Collects mineral deposits based on your water supply
Requires thorough cleaning with diluted white vinegar at end of year to remove buildup
For many people the minuses actually seem like positives. Most people don't want to buy a unit, bring it home and install it. Calling a trained certified technician to install a simple unit that only needs basic maintenance just like the furnace offers simplicity and efficiency of time. Portable Humidifiers:

I'm sure you have seen the large freestanding humidifiers that many people have utilized over the years. Each one offers the ability to have their own water supply and then plugs into any standard electrical outlet. These units sit in the room you want to humidify. These large or small units need some creative decorating to make them look like they "fit" as opposed to being an awkward humidifier that is unwelcome long staying house guest for the winter.

Pluses:
Portable
Great for renters
Simple to operate
Excellent at keeping smaller areas humidified
Portable humidifiers offer you the opportunity to select a specific room that you want to target for increasing the moisture in the air. It may be great on a limited basis for a person who has more severe or chronic issues with dry skin or other symptoms that occur in a dry environment. The person who is renting and doesn't have the opportunity to choose from a whole house unit, this offers a great way for you to still be comfortable and alleviate the ailments of a dry home.

Minuses:
Expensive when compared to whole-house units
Heavy but on rollers
Noisy similar to a window A/C unit
Continued maintenance
Requires water refills daily
Portable humidifiers come in a variety of ways and at a plethora of price points. To compare apples to apples a quality portable unit is actually much more expensive than whole-house humidifiers. This is simply because the whole-house units partner up with your existing furnace blower. A portable unit has to include one. Most portable units are heavy and awkward. However they are typically fitted with rolling casters for ease of movement. But we all know what happens when you get to rolling something heavy that has water in it. It also takes a little bit to get it stopped and in the mean time you might have a little accident resulting in water spilled all over your carpet, furniture or other items in your home. Most units have removable tanks, but with others, you'll have to bring the water to the unit. This too could result in potential water spillage into your carpets, furniture or on yourself. One important other thing to consider is the portable doesn’t run as quiet simply because of the way they are designed.

In addition, keeping your reservoir in your portable unit is critical. Standing water is bacteria's playground, spewing germs into your indoor air. The following recommendations were taken from The Mayo Clinic for safe use of a portable humidifier:
  • Don't fill the humidifier with tap water; use distilled or de-mineralized water instead.
  • Empty the reservoir daily and fill it with fresh water.
  • Clean the unit thoroughly every three days.
  • Replace the filter at least as often as the manufacturer recommends.
  • Watch for dampness around the unit, which indicates that it's turned up too high and may be creating conditions for mold and bacteria to thrive.
