The Des Moines area has already had some very warm and humid days with heat indices (how it feels) in the 100-degree range. The combination of heat and humidity could lead to heat illness so it’s important to have a cool reprieve from this intense heat.
So, Service Legends is partnering with Anawim Housing and the HAWK 97.3 to gather as many used window units as we can this summer. These units will then be donated to families that do not have the means to have air conditioning this summer.
If you have a used window air conditioner, in good working condition, please call 515-COMFORT (515-266-3678) and we will pick it up and redistribute to a family in need. This will be a great blessing to many families that are facing tough times. Donors will receive an In-Kind Donor Receipt.
Our partner, Anawim Housing, has been building homes, hope and community locally since 1987. They are a local leader in affordable housing development and management and own nearly 450 affordable housing units.

Hello there, friends! In this issue I’m not going to tell any funny stories or talk about any groundbreaking advances in our industry. Instead, I want to share with you why Service Legends is a special place, and why our business is doing well when so many others are struggling.
Obviously, the main reason for our success is you, our clients. But there’s a reason why much of our sales come from returning clients and referrals—and that would be my great staff! I want to take a moment to thank them for their incredible daily efforts. I also want to share with you why our people are so special, and stand apart from the competition.
1. You only get skilled people to work in your home! To be on our team and work with you, our technicians and salespeople have to be highly skilled—but not only technically. We want people in your home that can explain to you what’s going on with your particular situation so you can make the absolute best decision for your home! You know if it’s best to repair or replace something.
2. You only get people who receive the best training in the industry! Once we find a great person, the process doesn’t stop there. No, no. At Service Legends, our people receive continual technical and communication training. We log more hours in our training room than virtually any other company in the country. Of course, that’s not all we do to ensure you receive exceptional service. I’m always looking for more talented people to add to our team. Yes, it’s true; I spend 33% of every week looking and interviewing for our next employee. No, we don’t always need a person right away… but when we do, I want to have the best person to serve you!
We are currently looking to hire experienced professionals as well as individuals who want to learn heating and cooling through our 4 year apprenticeship program. If you know someone that has a positive attitude and a serving heart, we can take care of teaching them heating and cooling.
If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it probably uses R-22 as its cooling agent. Per the federal government, R-22 has been declared potentially hazardous to the environment—consequently, new air conditioners no longer use it and R-22 will continue to become scarcer with each year until it’s completely phased out.
What does this mean for you? Good question! If your current air conditioner requires additional R-22 to keep your home cool, you may not be able to find it in the future! If you do, the price could be incredible! One pound may cost as much as hundreds of dollars!
Thankfully, we’re not in dire straits just yet, however, as demand has grown, quantities of R-22 have become increasingly difficult to find. So, this is the time to act if you have an old air conditioner and you feel like it’s not quite performing like it used to. Even if it’s working fine, it might not be bad to have it evaluated by your Home Comfort Heroes at Service Legends.
When you call us at 515-COMFORT (515-266-3678), one of our highly trained technicians will evaluate your system as part of our Air Conditioner Tune Up. They will quickly let you know what type of refrigerant your system requires. They will then measure the amount of refrigerant in your current system to see if it matches the appropriate levels. Air conditioners are high-tech pieces of equipment with moving pistons and joints that are designed to work together in order to keep your home comfortable. Although the unit should never lose any refrigerant, it can happen, especially if it’s not maintained properly.
A lack of R-22 isn’t something you want to face! Without it, you can turn your thermostat down as far as you like—no cool air will be flowing from it to save you from the summer’s heat! Don’t be stuck in that situation! Let us know how we can help!

Kayak searches virtually every airline available for the cheapest flight from where you are to where you want to go. The more flexible you are on dates and times, the more money you will save. Use it for dates up to just three days before you want to leave. Or use their Explore tool to scan the world for destinations you can reach for the specified amount of money you would like to spend!
You’ve seen the William Shatner commercials— Priceline is actually a great service! If you’re not particularly married to a specific hotel chain, you can save up to 60% on a room by entering the highest bid you’re willing to pay! The only caveat is that they don’t tell you what hotel it is until after you’ve agreed to pay. However, it does give you hotel classes, so you won’t be stuck at a budget lodging if you’re looking for a nicer establishment.
Looking for fun or informational things to do while on your vacation? Tripadvisor.com is the site to visit. You can read hundreds of reviews—by real vacationers—on their stays all across the world! They’ll give you honest opinions on restaurants, amusement parks, beaches, everything! You can even see realistic pictures of potential hotels you’re exploring… not the ones the hotels load on their websites!
